About Us

Welcome to MentorVet. Our mission is to support veterans of the United States Armed Forces working towards their college degrees at any accredited institution of higher education. Join us in the growing nationwide show of support for our nation’s veterans and their families in recognition of the hurdles they face, the aspirations they can achieve, and the debt we owe them.

Join Us

We hope you will join us and our founding sponsor, Lockheed Martin, and our other sponsors and supporters. If you would like your company to become an official sponsor and roll out a volunteering effort for employees to show their support for student veterans, read our Sponsor FAQs, visit our Sponsors page to learn more, or email us at answers@mentorvet.org. If you would like to volunteer to be a mentor, simply go back to the home page and choose “FIND A PROTÉGÉ.” If you are or know of a veteran pursuing a college degree who would benefit from being a protégé, direct to the MentorVet home page, and choose “FIND A MENTOR.”

How It Works

Every study of success in college and career shows that mentoring is a key factor in helping people overcome hurdles and reach their goals. Our unique approach to the mentoring process achieves maximum power for mentoring with great simplicity: we match mentors from the world of work to protégés on campus with an eye to making the best “fit” between them. We then guide their relationship via email, universally accessible and simple, with a series of timed, carefully crafted but brief discussion suggestions or “prompts” designed to lead mentors to share their wisdom and experiences of the real world of work and help protégés to chart a pathway to success in their studies, graduation, and entry to the workforce. The great thing is that it only takes about 15 minutes a week. We also support each mentor and protégé with an online community, including a personal PROFILE page, access to RESOURCES just for student vets, OPPORTUNITIES and job postings just for the MentorVet community, and a FORUM for all to share wisdom and perspectives. The method has worked well for our parent organization, MentorNet, recipient of numerous grants and awards, including support from the National Science Foundation and a Presidential Award for Excellence. Since 1997, MentorNet has guided more than 60,000 proteges and mentors in a one-on-one relationship. Proteges have come from more than 400 different campuses and mentors from over .1400 companies and employers.

And more than 93% have persisted to graduate and earn their degrees.

as reported to the Department of Education in 2012. The scale of this success has been made possible by our Web-based program, which automatically matches mentors and protégés, and emails our guidance program to them, also automatically.

The MentorVet Method

To develop this method for student veterans on campus we adapted our well-researched program by talking to student vets, talking to veterans who graduated and entered the workforce, talking to mentors of student vets, speaking with our founding sponsor about the employment picture and opportunities for veterans, reading research on the hurdles facing veterans and veterans as students on campuses today, much of which you can find in our RESOURCES section, and conferring with our valued ally, Student Veterans of America. We will continue to develop and refine our program as we get feedback from participants and sponsors. If you have any suggestions, please email answers@mentorvet.org.
